Business Spotlight: Port O'Call
A keen interest in high-end retail began when J.D. Hornberger worked through college for Brooks Brothers in downtown Los Angeles. It was there he received his training on providing excellent customer service, attention to detail and appreciation for well-made clothing and products. His love for delighting the customer and building lasting customer relationships flourished during that time. In 1989 he started JDH & Company that specialized in selling gifts and stationery to corporations and businesses. His business grew and in 1996 he purchased Port O’Call, then located in Pasadena. In 1999 the Pasadena store closed and remained closed until 2017 when J.D. and Suzy Crowell reopened the store on Mission Street in San Marino. You can’t miss our location at 2481 Mission Street with the red English Telephone Booth in front. Our slogan is – “Meet me at the phone booth.”Where did you get the idea for this business?
I have always wanted to be a merchant of fine merchandise. I believe giving gifts brings joy to the giver and receiver. What better way to do that than to own a store where folks can find items that will create memories or beautify their homes.How are you different from other businesses?
Port O’Call is a unique store in that we curate every item in the shop. We also go out of our way to fulfill special orders and hard to find items for the home and dining. At Port O’Call, we sell the good, better and best. Our brand selection is key to our success.
