THE PATROL DIVISION

The Patrol Division is the “backbone” of the police department.  Staffed by uniformed personnel who patrol the city in clearly marked vehicles, officers remain attentive and available to handle routine and emergency calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Patrol Division is commanded by a Lieutenant whose primary responsibility is to provide general management direction to Sergeants and Officers assigned to the individual patrol shifts.  Sergeants act as Watch Commanders who lead team members to patrol assigned geographic areas within the City of San Marino.

Officers who patrol the city will generally provide the following services:

  • Patrol that is directed at the prevention of criminal acts, Vehicle Code violations, traffic collision investigation, the maintenance of public order, and the discovery of hazardous situations.

  • Crime prevention activities such as residential inspections, business inspections, community presentations, etc.

  • Calls for service, both routine and emergency in nature.

  • Investigation of both criminal and non-criminal acts.

  • The apprehension of criminal offenders.

  • Community orientated policing activities such as citizen assistance and individual citizen contacts of a positive nature.

  • The sharing of information between Divisions within the department as well as outside and other governmental agencies.

  • The application of resources to specific problems or situations within the community which may be improved by problem orientated policing strategies.

  • Traffic direction and control.

Other responsibilities integrated within the Patrol Division include traffic safety, motorcycles, reserve officers, Neighborhood Watch, training, community relations, School Resource Officer, dispatch, and communications.
